The nonprofit sector has been a critical player in the fight against climate change, given its incredible costs and the need to help educate the world about the threat we face. For my latest WattSherpa podcast, I was honored to speak with Sherry McConkey, the Founder and Director of the Shane McConkey Foundation. As an incredible activist, Sherry has led efforts that have resulted in nearly a million dollars in charitable giving, and inspiring thousands of young environmentalists.
A Legacy of Inspiration and Philanthropy
Sherry McConkey founded the Shane McConkey Foundation to honor the legacy of her late husband, Shane McConkey, a legendary free skier and base jumper. Shane's adventurous spirit and love for nature have continued to inspire thousands of young environmentalists, especially through the Foundation's annual Eco Challenge program. Sherry’s dedication to this cause has made a significant impact on communities across the country. Her enthusiasm and pride in the young participants were evident throughout our conversation.
From South Africa to Lake Tahoe: A Journey Fueled by Nature
Sherry McConkey’s journey began in South Africa, but it was her move over 20 years ago to Lake Tahoe that truly ignited her passion for the environment. Through her travels with her late husband, Sherry witnessed both the beauty and the devastation caused by environmental neglect. This experience fueled her commitment to environmental activism and laid the groundwork for the Foundation’s initiatives.
Building the Shane McConkey Foundation
Following Shane’s tragic passing in 2009, Sherry established the Shane McConkey Foundation. The road to building an organization that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and inspired numerous students was not easy. “At first, I was overwhelmed with a million things because Shane was well-known in the ski industry. Eventually, I stumbled upon the idea of the EcoChallenge while biking, always impressed by how kids can change their habits faster than adults,” Sherry shared.
The EcoChallenge: Fostering Young Environmental Advocates
The annual Eco Challenge empowers students nationally to combat climate change, encouraging them to develop sustainable habits. Sherry explained, “From six entrants in the first year to more significant participation now, the program has inspired kids to complete projects that not only help the environment but also build their confidence and leadership skills.” An inspiring story involved a little girl who was initially too nervous to be interviewed but eventually went on to study environmental science in college. Stories like these highlight the Eco Challenge's profound impact on shaping the next generation of environmental stewards.
Supporting the Foundation’s Mission
The success of the Shane McConkey Foundation can be attributed to the support of various partners, including Shane’s sponsors like Red Bull, Oakley and Pit Viper. These collaborations have been instrumental in growing the Foundation’s reach and resources, enabling it to make a more significant impact. One of the Foundation's notable fundraising events is the Pain McShlonkey Challenge, a hilarious and nostalgic snowblading race that embodies Shane’s spirit. Participants dress in costume and engage in races from the mountaintop, making it a highly anticipated and fun-filled event that raises substantial funds for the Foundation.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Sherry envisions expanding the Eco Challenge to different age categories and increasing its reach. “My dream is to divide the contest among elementary, middle school, high school, and universities, making it more fair for everyone,” Sherry said. With growing sponsorship from environmentally conscious companies, there’s optimism that the Foundation will achieve these goals and continue to inspire positive change worldwide.
Get Involved and Stay Inspired
Sherry McConkey’s dedication and the Foundation’s transformative work are truly inspiring. For students and individuals keen on making a difference, participating in the Eco Challenge is an excellent starting point.
